What’s the difference between turf, synthetic grass, and astroturf?
Turf
This is a general term that can refer to a stretch of grass or its synthetic counterpart. It doesn’t specify whether the grass is natural or artificial. This is a broad term that can refer to any ground cover used in landscaping or sports fields. It can mean natural grass or its artificial counterpart. For sports fields or residential lawns, “turf” can be either, depending on the context.
Synthetic Grass
This term is more specific and refers to artificial grass that is made from synthetic materials, such as polyethylene or polypropylene. Synthetic grass is designed to mimic the look and feel of natural grass and is used in a variety of settings, including sports fields, residential lawns, and commercial landscapes. Synthetic/artificial grass and turf are synonymous.
AstroTurf
AstroTurf is actually a brand name that has become a generic term for all kinds of artificial turf. It was the original brand of synthetic turf used in the Houston Astrodome in the 1960s, which popularized the concept of artificial grass. However, not all synthetic grass is AstroTurf, as there are many other brands and types of artificial turf that have evolved on the market.
